Msheireb Downtown Doha is a new neighbourhood in the heart of Qatar's capital city. Compact and walkable, its design was driven by the belief that a sustainable, Qatari, contemporary city, rooted in the local culture and climate was both desirable and achievable, More than 100 contemporary buildings, designed by 9 architectural practices, each distinct yet all expressing a shared architectural language are knit together by naturally cooled streets built at a human scale.

As the project reaches completion, a selection of key ‘citymakers’ involved in the project explore the values, concerns and principles that guide their approach to urbanism. Five online evenings of discussion and reflection explored the process behind the Msheireb development.

This publication records those events, with contributions from Tim Makower, Simon Gathercole, Sebastian Spengler, Sarah Prichard, Salma Samar Damluji, Rosanna Law, Robert Kennett, Ricky Burdett, Rami el Samahy, Peter Oborn, Peter Lau, Paul Finch, Patrick Baldwin, Olga Gomez, Michel Mossessian, Michael Webb, Lisa Cholmondeley, Laura Petrella, Kevin Underwood, Ian Gardner, Hina Faroqi, Helen Logan, Graham Morrison, Fatima Fawzy, Fanos Panayides, Duncan Swinhoe, Clare Melhuish, Anna Strongman, Ali Alraouf, Ada Yvars Bravo.

ABOUT CITYMAKERS
Each year, the Citymakers series brings together developers, planners, architects, academics, journalists and collaborators to look beyond the boundaries between practitioners and the public; between a site and the city; between spaces and society. The conference is organised by Allies and Morrison

ABOUT ALLIES AND MORRISON
Allies and Morrison is a practice of architects and urbanists based in London and Cambridge. We strive to design beautiful buildings that have long life and can adapt over the generations. We also shape enduring places whether new pieces of city or settlements at any scale. All our projects are concerned with the crafting of every detail and an appreciation for the uniqueness of each context.
